Chapter 16

What was that about?

Angel strode past the cave entrance, claiming the ‘high road’ where the ground rose in a rocky slope above the cave. Estimating the angles as she climbed, she figured the second chamber was somewhere beneath her feet. Focusing on that made it easier for her to push away her reaction to Seth.

Judging by the hitch in his breath when their arms touched, he’d felt something too, but allowing any personal interests to interfere with her search would be unprofessional and . . . Angel stumbled as a male voice spoke in her mind.

‘Forget romantic attachments. Personal interactions will weaken you. Do not allow yourself to become entangled.’ Although the speaker’s name wouldn’t come, the voice was clear and familiar. He’d been her trainer.

Where had that been?

By now, Angel knew it was useless to push for more information. Trickles of her past came when her mind was ready to release them. She pushed on, scrambling up a steep goat track. As she gained the high ground, a view opened up over the canopy below. Somewhere down there, Seth was following a parallel course to her. He’d said not to lose sight or voice contact, and she’d promised she wouldn’t, but her swift climb had probably put her ahead of the path he followed.

He’d be annoyed she hadn’t followed orders, but the need to create some space between them had been strong enough to send her rushing up the slope.

Don’t get involved.

The slope she’d climbed changed abruptly into a wall of sheer grey rock. She leaned against it and caught her breath then, raising both hands around her mouth, she sent out a cooee.

Seth’s answering call came and, moments later, she spotted him. His expression was difficult to read from this distance. Having made contact, Angel indicated she would continue on her path. Seth waved that he understood and then held to a course that kept them within sight of each other.

Moving slowly, Angel scanned the ground and foliage below her then followed each tree trunk down from its crown in case the backpack had caught on an upper branch. Repeating the search pattern, she made her way forward. It was a methodical and easy occupation, and it gave her mind time to replay those moments with Seth.

She barely knew him, and yet, at this moment, she knew him better than anyone else. Was that why her body had reacted to his? When she had no idea who was hunting her, or why, Seth was her safe place.

A thought niggled in her brain. Somehow, she knew she was used to looking after herself. She didn’t need a protector . . . hadn’t needed one since she was a child. So why was she thinking about Seth like that? Frustrated both by what she saw as weakness and by the heavy curtain that divided her from herself, she almost missed Seth’s call. She scrambled down the slope between slim-trunked trees and found him not more than forty metres away.

‘What is it? Did you find it?’

‘Not your backpack, but I found this.
